Updated VFR charts for July 1 cycle.

We’ve been busy on some other projects, but will be back adding new features to RunwayFinder soon.

Updated VFR and IFR charts and airport data for June 3rd cycle.

The beta site is currently running a new version of RunwayFinder. These changes will soon be deployed on the main site, so please test the beta and let us know about any issues.

This is the third time we have done a major overhaul of the site. With mobile devices becoming more capable and the browser wars now back in full swing, it was time to make some big updates. We are still working on enabling devices with small screens (e.g. iPhones), but larger devices like the iPad should work.

There are too many changes to list them all, but the highlights are:

  • The chart view now fills almost the entire browser window, and the advertisements and settings are in collapsible boxes. This allows you to view up to 40% more of the charts on your screen, especially on small screens like netbooks.
  • While you can still use RunwayFinder without creating an account, saving settings will now require one. This allows you to share your settings across multiple computers, a feature that will become increasingly useful as we add more features.
  • Layers can now be easily turned on and off. You can quickly check on AIRMET/SIGMETs, SUAs, etc. and just as quickly turn them off again. Of course the more layers you add, your browser may slow down. You can even turn off everything to just view charts.
  • Detailed airport and airspace information now displays in a new tab in your browser, greatly simplifying the RunwayFinder site.
  • A new “Info” box contains the lat/long of the center of the map, a link to the current view, and the last update time for weather and TFRs.

For those that like the technical details, the client-side Javascript code has been completely re-written using the new faster Google Maps v3 API. We are now using the Google Closure suite: compiler, library, and templates. We cannot say enough good things about the Google Closure tools. While adding numerous features, the code size actually decreased to 1/5 of the prior size resulting in faster downloads and better responsiveness.

We are very excited about this release. As always, if you find any issues please let us know.

Updated VFR charts for Mar 11 cycle.

Points can now be added to a route by right-clicking on any marker or anywhere on the map. Points can also be removed from a route by right-clicking on them and selecting “Remove”. We’ve had several requests for easier route manipulation. This is just the start of the changes, but will hopefully make it easier.
